The Beauty Benefits of Exercise

beautybenefitsWorking out can boost your health, but did you know it could also improve the appearance of your skin? And who doesn’t want a clear and glowing complexion?

At L’Arte Della Bellezza, we endorse a healthy lifestyle.  Working out, along with good eating habits and a solid skin care routine, can contribute to increased self-confidence and an all-around positive outlook on life. So what can exercise do for your complexion? Keep reading.

Exercise is a natural stress reliever

Putting the body in motion releases endorphins: natural painkillers that give you a feeling of euphoria; hence, the phrase ‘runners high’.  Exercise is associated with improved mood and increased learning, while also reducing depression, relieving stress and contributing to better sleep patterns. When you sleep well, your body produces collagen and releases growth hormones, which facilitate the rejuvenation of cells, muscles, tissues and bones throughout the night.  See…there’s a reason it’s called “beauty sleep”!

Exercise makes you sweat

Working up a good sweat is like getting a mini-facial. When your pores dilate, sweat is expelled, along with all the dirt trapped inside. These excretions can help clear skin. Just make sure you wash your face immediately after your workout to prevent the dirt and oil from being trapped inside again. And remember the sunscreen if you’re training outdoors!

Exercise boosts oxygen and improves blood flow

Because it increases blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keeps your complexion vibrant and radiant. “Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin,” says dermatologist, Dr. Ellen Marmur. Blood flow also helps the body carry away waste products like free radicals from working cells. Free radicals are harmful to the skin and the body in general; when the body is overwhelmed by free radicals, they overcome the antioxidants available, which can lead to wrinkles.

Whether you engage in a yoga class, a dance/aerobic exercise routine, or a weight-training session, working out will benefit your skin and your body in countless ways. So what do you say? Pull your hair back, don those sneakers, and let’s move!
