Laser hair removal uses a beam of highly concentrated light to penetrate the hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the follicle and greatly inhibits future hair growth. Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the US, and the typical result – after four to six sessions there is substantial hair reduction (no laser provides total, permanent hair removal).
The Procedure
Prior to treatment, the patient should not wax, pluck or have electrolysis, as these procedures remove the hair at its root. In the laser procedure, the root of the hair is the target. At the appointment, the hair undergoing treatment is trimmed or shaved and the laser equipment is adjusted to accommodate the patient’s skin color and sensitivity, and the thickness, pigmentation and location of the hair to be removed. Both the patient and the technician typically wear eye protection during the procedure.
Although L’Arte’s laser machine works with ALL skin/hair combinations (not all systems do), laser therapy is most effective for those with light skin and dark hair. The contrast makes it easier for the laser to target the hair follicle. The treatment slows down the growth of hair, and when and if it does grow back (it typically takes a few treatments to experience a long period of no-growth), it is finer and softer. Although results vary from candidate to candidate, after a few sessions, you can expect little to no hair re-growth. It is quite an effective solution and can end unnecessary embarrassment and provide increased self-confidence. For many, laser hair removal is as life changing as the discovery of half off cocktails at happy hour!
Laser hair removal is precise. The laser specifically targets an area and leaves the surrounding skin undamaged. Depending on the area being treated, treatment time may range from 5 minutes to an hour. After the treatment, the patient might experience some redness and possibly slight swelling – similar to a mild sunburn. Cool compresses and moisturizing creams can provide relief. Note that sun exposure should be avoided after treatment, and sunscreen should be used.
Follow up appointments are generally scheduled four to six weeks after the previous treatment and the procedure is repeated until hair growth stops.
